There are relatively few hospitals; about half are privately administered. However, the extensive network of clinics, down to village level, makes access to health care reasonably good. As a result, health indicators have improved significantly over the past 20 years. The death rate declined from 20 per 1,000 in 1965 to 9 per 1,000 in 1990, helping to increase life expectancy to 62 years. Infant mortality more than halved, from 128 to 61 per 1,000 live births, over the same period.
